This time I'm inviting you to ESZTERGOM, to a city with county rights situated on the right bank of the Danube in Komárom-Esztergom County. It is an important centre of industry, education and river transport. The city in its present form was established in 1895, when the Free Royal City of Esztergom merged with three neighbouring towns.
Esztergom is one of Hungary’s oldest and most historically significant cities. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and during the Roman period, the settlement, known as Solva, played an important role in the defence of the empire’s frontier.
Following the Hungarian Conquest, Esztergom emerged as one of the principal centres of the developing Hungarian state from the 10th century onwards. It is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Saint Stephen, Hungary’s first king, who was crowned in 1000. The city also became the seat of the Archdiocese of Esztergom, which has historically held the highest position within the Hungarian Catholic Church. As a result, Esztergom has played a crucial role in Hungary’s political, religious and cultural history.
During the day we are going to visit the city's sites with in frame of a 2.5 -3- hour-long guided tour followed by a lunch at Restaurant Mediterraneo. mediterraneo.hu
